WCHS softball drops district game to Stone Memorial

White County High School softball team looked outmatched April 3 when they hosted the Stone Memorial Lady Panthers. The Warriorettes struggled on both offense and defense resulting in a 10-4 loss to a district opponent.

The Lady Panthers took charge of the game right from the start putting four runs on the scoreboard in their first at bat and adding three more in the second inning. The Warriorettes weren’t able to respond at all until after Stone Memorial had the more-than-comfortable seven-run lead, and, even at that, they were only able to manage a single run in the bottom of the second inning.

While they kept the Panthers off the board in the top of the third inning, White County was only able to push one more runner around the bases in their half. The Lady Panthers easily negated the Warriorettes two runs since they had last scored by adding two more to their side of the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning. Down 9-2 midway through the fifth inning, the Warriorettes looked like they might try to rally, but Stone Memorial shut them down after two runners crossed the plate. Just for good measure, the Lady Panthers added a single run in the top of the seventh that the Warriorettes weren’t able to answer and the final scoreboard read: Visitors 10, Home 4.

The Warriroettes’ offense managed seven hits and four walks across seven innings, but it was the nine runners left on base that kept their offense stalled. Anna McCulley had two hits, two RBIs and a run scored while five other Warriorettes managed one hit apiece. The RBIs came thanks to extra base hits. Along with McCulley, who hit a double driving in a pair of runs, Kami Clark and Callie Phillips each had a run-producing double during the game.

Mabry Taylor took the loss in the circle. Taylor faced 40 batters, giving up 15 hits and three walks on the night.
