Martha Sue Bell Broyles

Martha Sue Bell Broyles, 90, passed away Sept. 20, 2024, surrounded by her loving husband and family.

She was born in 1933, in Quebeck, Tennessee.

Martha Sue married Kenneth Ray Broyles, on Dec. 20, 1952, and they enjoyed 72 years of being together.

Martha Sue graduated from White County High School, where she enjoyed being a Warrior cheerleader.  She attended Tennessee Tech University, where she and Kenneth made many lifelong friends.  She made the care of her family her career. She was always involved at the schools her children attended as room mother, Brownie and Girl Scout leader, and 4-H volunteer.  She was also very active at West Sparta church of Christ as a Bible school and Vacation Bible School teacher, bus worker, and food preparer for the sick and get-togethers.  According to her family, she was one of the best cooks in the county!

Martha Sue was very active in the Captain Sally Tompkins Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.  She would often wear period dress to conduct memorials at cemeteries to honor soldiers and to present educational programs at local schools.  She was so proud of her Southern heritage.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Fearon and Gladys Grissom Bell; her siblings, baby twin sister, Mary Ann; older sister, Josephine and husband A. Q. McDonald, who had resided in Cookeville; and brother, Lorie and wife Kathryn McBride Bell, who had resided in Chattanooga.

She is lovingly survived by her children, Steven Ray (Denise), of Sparta, Sherrie Beth McCulley (Robert), of Sparta, Susan Raye Harris (Howard), of Nashville, William (Bill) Fearon Broyles, of Nashville; six grandchildren, Zachary Broyles (Morgan), Hannah Broyles Marcum (Daniel), Keith McCulley, Hallie, Houston and Mattie Harris; two great-grandchildren, Sydney Marcum and Graham Broyles; brother, Louis (Ann Sparkman) Bell, of Chattanooga; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was 1 p.m., Sept. 23, 2024, at West Sparta church of Christ, with burial in Preston Heights Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Steven Broyles, Bill Broyles, Howard Harris, Robert McCulley, Zachary Broyles, Keith McCulley, and Houston Harris

Hunter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
